Democratic Lawmaker Posts, Deletes ‘I Hope Trump is Assassinated!’

A state senator in Missouri posted a regrettable Facebook comment during an online discussion Thursday morning about President Donald Trump. Democrat Maria Chappelle-Nadal was going back and forth with another user, who posted a comment about a cousin who worked with the Secret Service. That user then posted again, saying, “now I’ll probably get a visit from the secret service,” to which Chappelle-Nadal replied, “No. I will. I hope Trump is assassinated!”

The conversation was deleted, but not before screengrabs started circulating around the internet.

The first user, Christopher Gagne, insisted to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that his comments had nothing to do with assassinating the president, but was in reference to using the 25th Amendment to declare Trump unfit to serve and replacing him with Vice President Mike Pence.

Chappelle-Nadal later said, “I didn’t mean what I put up. Absolutely not. I was very frustrated.” She was specifically frustrated with the domestic terror attack at a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville. “It was in response to the concerns that I am hearing from residents of St. Louis. I have deleted it, and it should have been deleted, but there is something way more important that we should be talking about.”

She talked about her constituents who are afraid to go out in public and are having nightmares. “It’s worse than even Ferguson,” she said.
